Patriotism And Nation Building

For India, patriotism is not a new concept. Rigveda depicts loyalty towards nation. The geographical entity and spiritual oneness of India has been clearly expressed and invoked in the Vedic hymns extolling the sacred rivers of the land. The shape of India as a nation also finds mention in the Mahabharata. Moreover, religious scriptures and historical evidence loudly profess that India has been unified under many emperors and governments in ancient times. Ancient texts mention India under king Bharata and the term Akhand Bharat was also used in these texts.

What comes to your mind…when I say the word ‘PATRIOTISM’? The tricolor? The Indian Defence Forces? To some extent yes. However, the true essence of patriotism lies in service before self. What patriotism essentially implies is our duty towards our Nation and serving our nation before ourselves. Now…I have another question. What comes to your mind when I say, ‘SERVICE TO THE NATION’?

True service to the nation implies the sincerity with which we do duty. Whether it is at the individual level, or organizational. We have seen instances of individuals setting examples by their exemplary work and organizations which have set landmarks in nation building.

The ‘Tiranga’, the Indian tricolor, is now waving from almost every home. There is frenzy of the patriotic spirit rising everywhere. I have often reflected what ‘Freedom’ means, to me or anybody else. I had recently read somewhere that freedom is the oxygen for the soul. What a lovely way to put it!, We have been breathing free for 75 years. The ‘harghartiranga’ movement has been a success and a thread that unites us beyond our differences.
